What LGBTQIA+ affirming counselling looks like at Hope Therapy

Affirming counselling means your therapist works from a position that respects your sexual orientation and gender identity as they are. Your identity is the starting point — not the problem, not a hypothesis, and not something that needs to be explained before the real work begins.

At Hope Therapy, this is not a marketing position. It is an organisational standard. We work in line with the NCPS Code of Ethics, which explicitly states that homosexuality, bisexuality, transgender identities, and asexuality are not disorders. We align with the BACP prohibition on conversion practices. Every therapist working with LGBTQIA+ clients is held to this standard — and we match you with someone who has genuine experience, not just a policy statement.

We have a team of over 90 qualified therapists. Some identify as LGBTQIA+ themselves. Others are experienced allies with specialist training and supervision. During your free consultation, we ask about your preferences — including whether LGBTQIA+ lived experience, a specific therapeutic approach, or a particular communication style matters to you — and match accordingly. If the first match does not feel right, we find someone who does, at no extra cost.

Hope Therapy is an NCPS Organisational Member and has been operating since 2014. Our clinical standards are overseen by founder Ian Stockbridge — MBACP (Senior Accredited), SCoPEd Band C — who continues to lead the practice and ensure that affirming support is delivered consistently across the team, not just by individual therapists who happen to have the right experience.

Who this service is for

Our LGBTQIA+ counselling service is for anyone who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, or anywhere else on the spectrum of sexual orientation and gender identity — and who wants a therapist who will not need educating before they can help.

People come to us for a wide range of reasons. Some are directly connected to identity — coming out, navigating family rejection, exploring gender, working through internalised shame, or managing the cumulative impact of minority stress. Others are not: anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, work pressures, burnout, or bereavement that simply need a therapist who understands the whole context of your life without it being the focus of every session.

We work with individuals, couples (in all relationship structures), and LGBTQIA+ people who are also neurodivergent. We support people at every stage — from those still questioning to those who came out decades ago. Whether you are navigating something new or revisiting something old, the service is designed to meet you where you are, not where someone else thinks you should be.

If you want to explore specific areas in more depth, our LGBTQIA+ condition pages cover topics including:

How sessions work — and how we adapt to you

Sessions are 50 minutes, either online via Zoom or face-to-face at one of our locations across England. Most clients choose online — it offers privacy, flexibility, and nationwide access regardless of where you live. For many LGBTQIA+ clients, this removes one of the biggest barriers to accessing affirming support: geography. This is particularly valued by clients who may not have access to affirming therapists in their local area, or who prefer the discretion of accessing support from home.

Sessions are typically weekly, though we can accommodate fortnightly or flexible scheduling depending on your situation. There is no fixed number of sessions — some people come for a focused block of work around a specific issue, others prefer longer-term support. Your therapist will discuss this with you and review progress together.

The pace of the work is led by you. There is no agenda beyond what matters to you in each session. Some people come knowing exactly what they want to work on. Others come with a feeling rather than a plan. Both are welcome. Your therapist is there to support you — not to direct, diagnose, or steer you toward any particular conclusion about your identity or your life.

We can adapt sessions to suit your needs. For neurodivergent clients, this might mean more structure, explicit agendas, processing breaks, or reduced eye-contact expectations. For clients navigating acute distress, it might mean a slower pace or a focus on stabilisation before deeper work begins. These adaptations are discussed during your free consultation and reviewed as you go.

Sessions are confidential in line with professional ethical standards. There are limited circumstances where confidentiality may need to be adjusted — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm — and your therapist will explain these clearly at the outset.

Therapeutic approaches we offer

Your therapist will recommend the approach that best fits your situation. You do not need to know which is right before you start.

Our booking team and your therapist will discuss which approach — or combination — feels most appropriate for what you are bringing. You don’t need to know which is right before you start. If the first match doesn’t feel like the right fit, please tell us and we’ll find someone who does.

Real Experiences

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

For the first time, I didn’t have to explain my relationship or justify my identity before we could start the actual work. My therapist just got it. That made such a difference to how quickly I was able to open up.

Alex, who sought support for anxiety and identity

Coming out later in life brought up so much I hadn’t expected. My counsellor helped me process it without judgment — and without making my identity the ‘problem’ to solve. Exactly what I needed.

Jamie, who sought support navigating coming out

Online sessions meant I could access support discreetly while I was still figuring things out. The matching process found me someone with real LGBTQ+ experience. I couldn’t have asked for better.

What to expect

Starting counselling can feel like a big step — especially when past experiences have made you cautious about who you trust. Here is how it works.

1

Free consultation

A brief, relaxed 15-minute conversation with a member of our booking team. We listen to what is going on and explore whether counselling could help. No pressure, no obligation.

2

Matched with a therapist

Based on your needs and preferences, we carefully match you with one of our 90+ qualified therapists. If it doesn’t feel right, we’ll find someone else — at no extra cost.

3

Your first session

Your therapist will take time to understand your situation and what you are hoping to work on. There is no rush, no script, and nothing you have to share before you are ready.

Most clients hear back from us the same working day, and typically begin sessions within a week of the free consultation — depending on your preferences and therapist availability.

How we match you with the right therapist for LGBTQIA+ affirming support

Choosing a therapist is a personal decision, and we take time to get the match right.

A careful match, not a long list

Therapist availability changes from week to week, so rather than asking you to choose from a directory, we take time during your free 15-minute consultation to understand what you are looking for — and then match you with a therapist suited to your needs.

During the consultation, we will ask about:

  • What you would like the work to focus on, and any specific concerns you would like support with
  • Whether you would prefer face-to-face counselling, online sessions, or a combination of the two
  • Any preferences around therapy approach (counselling, CBT, EMDR, hypnotherapy, mindfulness, ACT, compassion focused therapy and others)
  • Day and time availability that works around your life
  • Any specialisms that matter to you — for example LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy, neurodiversity-affirming support, or particular life experiences
  • Practical preferences — for example therapist gender, age range, or shared lived experience where that matters to you

All therapists we work with are qualified and registered with appropriate UK professional bodies, and we will confirm the most suitable options with you before any sessions begin.

Professional standards across our team

Hope Therapy & Counselling Services has been operating since 2014, and we hold Organisational Membership with the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). We work in line with the NCPS Code of Ethics and BACP Good Practice, and our wider clinical standards include:

  • Qualified, professionally registered therapists across the team — registrations vary per therapist and are confirmed before matching
  • Ongoing clinical supervision in line with professional body requirements
  • Continuing professional development to maintain and develop practice
  • Clear confidentiality standards, with limits explained before sessions begin
  • Client-centred, non-judgemental and inclusive practice across all areas of identity and experience
  • Founder-led clinical oversight from Ian Stockbridge — MBACP (Senior Accredited) – who continues to lead the practice and oversee its standards

Whether you choose face-to-face counselling near you or online therapy from anywhere in the UK, you can expect to be matched with a therapist who is appropriately qualified and suited to the support you are looking for.

Frequently asked questions

What makes LGBTQIA+ affirming counselling different from general counselling?

Affirming counselling means your therapist respects your identity as it is — it is not up for debate or assessment. Your sexual orientation and gender identity are the starting point, not the problem. Hope Therapy does not practise or support any form of conversion therapy, in line with NCPS and BACP ethical standards.

Are your therapists LGBTQIA+ themselves?

Some identify as LGBTQIA+, and others are experienced allies with specialist training. During your free consultation, we take care to match you with a therapist whose experience and approach feel right for you. If the match does not feel right, we will find someone else at no extra cost.

What issues can LGBTQIA+ counselling help with?

Anything you bring. Common areas include coming out, relationship difficulties, family rejection, anxiety and depression connected to minority stress, gender identity exploration, internalised shame, and the intersection of LGBTQIA+ identity with neurodivergence. You can also come for reasons unrelated to identity — and simply want a therapist who understands the full context of your life.

Is LGBTQIA+ counselling available online?

Yes. All sessions are available online via Zoom or telephone from anywhere in the UK. Many LGBTQIA+ clients prefer online for privacy and accessibility. Face-to-face is also available in locations across England.

Is everything I share in counselling confidential?

Yes. Sessions are confidential in line with professional ethical standards. There are some limited exceptions — for example, where there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else — and your therapist will explain these clearly before you begin.

How much does LGBTQIA+ counselling cost?

Individual counselling starts from £65 per 50-minute session. Couples counselling from £85. CBT from £85 and EMDR from £95. We may be able to offer a reduced rate — just ask during your free 15-minute consultation. There are no hidden fees.

Built by someone who saw the need from the inside

Ian Stockbridge - Founder & Counsellor, Hope Therapy & Counselling

SCoPEd Band C

MBACP & SNCPS Senior Accredited

“Having worked for more than 25 years in senior management, I saw the same thing repeatedly — people struggling with mental health and relationship challenges, and so often struggling to access the right support when it was needed. It was out of this recognition of human need that Hope was born.”

Ian Stockbridge founded Hope Therapy after 25+ years leading large commercial teams – watching colleagues carry stress, anxiety, and personal difficulty with nowhere to turn. He retrained rigorously, now holding Senior Accredited status with both the BACP and NCPS, alongside SCoPEd Band C — the highest independent competence verification in the UK counselling profession.

He remains a practising therapist, clinical supervisor, published author of PMDD Uncovered, and co-presenter of The Talk Room Podcast. Hope Therapy was built on the things he saw were most broken – and designed, from the ground up, to do better.
