What it involves
What is life coaching, and what does it actually involve?
There is a particular kind of feeling that often brings people to coaching. It is not necessarily that something is wrong — it is more that something feels stuck, unclear, or quietly unsatisfying. You might have a sense that you want more from your work, your relationships, or your life in general, but struggle to articulate exactly what, or where to start. You might be facing a decision and find yourself going round in circles. You might be performing well on the outside while feeling uncertain or unfulfilled on the inside.
Life coaching is a structured, confidential conversation designed to help you explore that feeling with more honesty and clarity than you might manage on your own. A coach does not tell you what to do. They ask the kinds of questions that help you think more clearly, notice what matters to you, and identify what might be getting in the way.
Sessions typically last 50 minutes and are held weekly or fortnightly — online via Zoom or telephone, or face-to-face where available. The number of sessions depends entirely on what you are working on and what feels useful.
Please note: Life coaching is offered by qualified practitioners and is not covered by our NCPS Organisational Membership. Our NCPS Organisational Membership covers counselling and psychotherapy only. Our coaches hold appropriate separate coaching qualifications and professional memberships.
What life coaching can offer a space to explore
- Career direction and decisions
- Work–life balance
- Confidence and self-belief
- Feeling stuck or unclear
- Relationships and communication
- Life transitions and change
- Goal-setting and clarity
- Stress and overwhelm at work
This is not a comprehensive list. If something on your mind isn’t here, a free consultation is the right place to explore whether coaching could help.
Coaching and counselling are different things. Coaching is broadly forward-focused — on where you are, where you want to be, and what’s in the way. Counselling tends to focus on understanding and processing past experiences and emotional difficulties. The two approaches can complement each other, and some of our coaches also have counselling or therapeutic backgrounds. If you are not sure which is right for you, your free consultation is a good place to start.
What We Offer
What happens in a life coaching session
If you have never worked with a coach before, it can be hard to know what to expect. Coaching sessions are more structured than counselling — but they are not prescriptive. There is no agenda other than yours.
The first session
The opening session is primarily about getting to know you and understanding what you are hoping to explore. Your coach will ask about your current situation, what has brought you to coaching now, and what you would find most useful from the sessions. You will not be expected to have a polished summary of your goals — part of the work is often arriving at greater clarity about what those goals actually are.
You will also have a chance to ask questions, get a sense of how your coach works, and decide together whether the approach feels like a good fit. Confidentiality is discussed in the first session — see the note below.
Ongoing sessions
From the second session onwards, you and your coach will work on whatever is most live and relevant for you at that point. Sessions typically involve reflection, exploration, and practical thinking — often resulting in one or two specific things you want to try, test, or think about before the next session. Progress is reviewed regularly, and the focus can shift as your thinking evolves.
How long does it take?
There is no standard answer. Some people find that four to six sessions gives them the clarity and direction they were looking for. Others prefer to work over a longer period, particularly when the questions they are sitting with are more complex. You are free to end or pause sessions at any point, and you and your coach will review how things are going as you progress.
A note on confidentiality: Coaching sessions are confidential. There are limited circumstances in which this may need to change — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm to you or others. Your coach will explain these limits clearly before you begin your work together.
Is it right for you?
Who life coaching is for — and where counselling may be more appropriate
Life coaching works well when you are broadly functioning but feel stuck, unclear, or dissatisfied in a particular area. It tends to suit people who are ready to be active in their own thinking and are looking for structure and support to do that.
Coaching may be a good fit if:
- You feel stuck or unclear about direction in work or life
- You are facing a decision and finding it hard to think clearly
- You want to develop confidence or make changes in how you show up
- You are managing work stress or approaching burnout
- You are broadly functioning but feel something important is missing
Counselling may be more appropriate if:
- You are experiencing significant anxiety, depression, or emotional distress
- You are processing trauma or significant past experiences
- You are dealing with grief, bereavement, or a significant loss
- You have a diagnosed or suspected mental health condition
If you are not sure which service fits, we will not recommend something unless we genuinely think it suits your situation. Your free consultation is the right place to explore this — and sometimes the answer is a combination of both.
Our coaches
Qualified coaches, carefully matched to you
Our coaches hold appropriate professional qualifications in coaching. Many also have backgrounds in counselling, psychology, or other therapeutic disciplines — which informs the depth and quality of the work, without making coaching sessions into therapy.
Because coaching is not a regulated profession in the UK in the same way as counselling, the quality of training and professional background varies significantly across providers. At Hope Therapy, we apply the same care to selecting and working with coaches as we do with our counselling team — including reviewing qualifications, professional memberships, and relevant experience before any coach joins the team.
With 90+ qualified practitioners across England, we can match you with a coach whose background, approach and availability genuinely fit what you are looking for. The matching conversation happens in your free 15-minute consultation, at no cost and with no obligation to proceed.
All coaching is available online via Zoom or telephone, UK-wide. Face-to-face sessions are available in some locations across England — ask during your consultation if this matters to you.
What to look for in a life coach
- Recognised coaching qualification
- Membership of a professional coaching body
- Relevant experience in your area of concern
- Clear scope — what coaching does and doesn’t cover
- Transparent fees discussed before you begin

The process
What happens when you get in touch
Starting something new can feel uncertain, particularly when the questions you are sitting with are personal ones. Here is what the process actually looks like.
1
Book your free 15-minute consultation
A brief, relaxed conversation with a member of our team. You tell us what’s going on and what you are hoping to get from coaching. We answer your questions and explore whether coaching or another type of support might be most useful. No pressure, no commitment.
2
We match you with a coach
Based on what you share in the consultation — the areas you want to explore, your availability, and any preferences about approach — we match you with the most suitable coach from our team. With 90+ practitioners across England, we have the range to find a genuinely good fit.
3
You begin your coaching sessions
Sessions are typically weekly or fortnightly, 50 minutes each, online or face-to-face. Your coach will work at your pace, responding to what feels most useful to you. Progress is reviewed as you go, and you decide how long the work continues.
Most clients hear back from us the same working day, and typically begin sessions within a week of the free consultation — depending on your preferences and therapist availability.
Standards you can trust
How we match you with the right therapist experienced in life coaching
Choosing a therapist is a personal decision, and we take time to get the match right.
A careful match, not a long list
Therapist availability changes from week to week, so rather than asking you to choose from a directory, we take time during your free 15-minute consultation to understand what you are looking for — and then match you with a therapist suited to your needs.
During the consultation, we will ask about:
- What you would like the work to focus on, and any specific concerns you would like support with
- Whether you would prefer face-to-face counselling, online sessions, or a combination of the two
- Any preferences around therapy approach (counselling, CBT, EMDR, hypnotherapy, mindfulness, ACT, compassion focused therapy and others)
- Day and time availability that works around your life
- Any specialisms that matter to you — for example LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy, neurodiversity-affirming support, or particular life experiences
- Practical preferences — for example therapist gender, age range, or shared lived experience where that matters to you
All therapists we work with are qualified and registered with appropriate UK professional bodies, and we will confirm the most suitable options with you before any sessions begin.
Professional standards across our team
Hope Therapy & Counselling Services has been operating since 2014, and we hold Organisational Membership with the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). We work in line with the NCPS Code of Ethics and BACP Good Practice, and our wider clinical standards include:
- Qualified, professionally registered therapists across the team — registrations vary per therapist and are confirmed before matching
- Ongoing clinical supervision in line with professional body requirements
- Continuing professional development to maintain and develop practice
- Clear confidentiality standards, with limits explained before sessions begin
- Client-centred, non-judgemental and inclusive practice across all areas of identity and experience
- Founder-led clinical oversight from Ian Stockbridge — MBACP (Senior Accredited) – who continues to lead the practice and oversee its standards
Whether you choose face-to-face counselling near you or online therapy from anywhere in the UK, you can expect to be matched with a therapist who is appropriately qualified and suited to the support you are looking for.

FAQ
Common Questions
What is the difference between life coaching and counselling?
Counselling tends to focus on understanding and processing past experiences, emotional difficulties, and psychological distress. Life coaching is generally more forward-looking — it focuses on where you are now, where you want to be, and what might be getting in the way. The two approaches can complement each other, and some of our coaches have counselling or therapeutic training alongside their coaching qualifications. During your free consultation, we can help you explore which approach might be more useful for your situation.
Is life coaching available online?
Yes. All our coaches offer sessions online via Zoom or telephone, UK-wide. If you are based in an area where we have face-to-face availability, in-person sessions may also be an option — ask during your free consultation.
Is life coaching confidential?
Yes. Coaching sessions are confidential. There are limited circumstances in which this may need to change — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm to you or others, or where there is a legal obligation to disclose. Your coach will explain these limits clearly at the outset of your work together. Please note that coaching is not regulated in the same way as counselling, and the confidentiality framework may differ from that of a clinical service — your coach will discuss this with you in your first session.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no fixed number. Some people find that four to six sessions gives them what they need to clarify their thinking and take meaningful steps forward. Others prefer to work over a longer period. The right length depends on what you are exploring, how much has shifted, and what feels useful to you. You and your coach will review progress as you go, and you are free to end or pause sessions at any point.
How much does life coaching cost?
Life coaching sessions start from £65 per session. All fees are discussed clearly during your free 15-minute consultation before you commit to anything.
Is life coaching right for me, or would counselling be more helpful?
If you are primarily facing significant emotional distress, depression, anxiety, trauma, or a mental health concern, counselling or therapy is likely to be the more appropriate starting point. Coaching tends to work well when you are functioning reasonably well but feel stuck, unclear about direction, or aware that something needs to change. If you are not sure, your free consultation is a good place to explore this honestly — we will not recommend a service unless we genuinely think it fits your situation.
Still have questions? The free consultation is the easiest way to ask them — no pressure to book sessions.

“Having worked for more than 25 years in senior management, I saw the same thing repeatedly — people struggling with mental health and relationship challenges, and so often struggling to access the right support when it was needed. It was out of this recognition of human need that Hope was born.”
Ian Stockbridge founded Hope Therapy after 25+ years leading large commercial teams – watching colleagues carry stress, anxiety, and personal difficulty with nowhere to turn. He retrained rigorously, now holding Senior Accredited status with both the BACP and NCPS, alongside SCoPEd Band C — the highest independent competence verification in the UK counselling profession.
He remains a practising therapist, clinical supervisor, published author of PMDD Uncovered, and co-presenter of The Talk Room Podcast. Hope Therapy was built on the things he saw were most broken – and designed, from the ground up, to do better.
