What We Treat
Trauma takes many forms — we support them all
If you are not sure whether what you have been through counts as trauma, it very often does. Our therapists support people through a wide range of difficult experiences — and you do not need a diagnosis to reach out.
Not sure which category fits your experience? That is completely normal — trauma is rarely tidy. Book your free consultation and we will talk it through.
Our approach to trauma therapy
Trauma affects people differently — and effective therapy has to reflect that. At Hope Therapy, we offer specialist trauma support online across the UK and face-to-face in locations across England, matching each person carefully with a therapist whose experience and approach suit their particular situation and history.
Our approach is grounded in the principle that therapy is led by your pace, not ours. We begin with stabilisation — helping you build the internal resources and sense of safety that make deeper therapeutic work possible. Nothing is rushed, and you are always in control of what you explore and when.
Our therapists use NICE-recommended treatments for trauma, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and trauma-focused CBT — approaches with strong evidence behind them for both PTSD and complex trauma. You can read more about how these work on our dedicated service pages. For many people, trauma-informed counselling — which understands the impact of trauma on the whole person — is the foundation on which everything else is built.
You can read more about our general approach to trauma and PTSD on our conditions page. This page focuses on the practical side — what Hope Therapy offers, how it works, and how to get started.
Our Treatments
Treatments we offer for trauma
We use NICE-recommended, evidence-based approaches — matched to your individual situation, not applied as a one-size-fits-all programme.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a NICE-recommended treatment for PTSD and trauma. It works by helping the brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose their intensity — without requiring you to talk through events in detail. Available online across the UK.

Who we support
We work with adults (18+) across the full range of trauma presentations — from a single traumatic event to years of complex or cumulative experience. Our therapists have experience supporting:
- Survivors of PTSD and complex PTSD
- Adults healing from childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)
- Survivors of narcissistic and emotionally abusive relationships
- Survivors of domestic abuse, coercive control, and exploitation
- People affected by financial abuse
- Survivors of sexual abuse, assault, and sexual trauma
- People who have experienced birth trauma — including birth partners and fathers
- Individuals affected by relationship trauma of all kinds
Sessions are available online across the UK and face-to-face in locations across England. Online therapy means specialist trauma support is accessible wherever you live; for those who prefer in-person sessions, our face-to-face network spans locations across England.
We work in an LGBTQIA+ affirming and neurodiversity-affirming way. Specialist matching means we can take account of your identity and lived experience when selecting the right therapist for you.
What our clients say
Real experiences
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
I had been carrying what happened for years, convinced I just needed to get on with things. Counselling helped me finally understand why I reacted the way I did — and to stop blaming myself.

Getting Started
What to expect
Starting trauma therapy is a significant step. Here is how the process works — simply and clearly.
1
Free consultation
A brief, relaxed 15-minute conversation with a member of our team. You do not need to share details of what happened — we simply want to understand what kind of support you are looking for and explore whether we are the right fit. No pressure, no obligation.
2
Matched with a specialist
Based on your situation and preferences, we match you carefully with one of our 90+ qualified therapists — someone whose experience and approach suit your specific needs. If the match does not feel right, we will find someone else at no extra cost.
3
Stabilisation first
Before any deeper processing work, your therapist will help you build a sense of safety and internal resource. Effective trauma therapy begins with this foundation — nothing is rushed, and you are always in control of the pace.
Most clients hear back from us the same working day, and typically begin sessions within a week of the free consultation — depending on your preferences and therapist availability.
Standards you can trust
How we match you with the right trauma therapist
Finding a therapist with genuine trauma experience matters. We take time to get the match right.
A careful match, not a long list
Therapist availability changes from week to week, so rather than asking you to choose from a directory, we take time during your free 15-minute consultation to understand what you are looking for — and then match you with a therapist suited to your needs.
During the consultation, we will ask about:
- The type of experience or trauma you are hoping to work on, and any relevant history
- Whether you would prefer online sessions or face-to-face counselling
- Your preferences around therapy approach — EMDR, trauma-focused CBT, trauma-informed counselling, or a combination
- Any specialisms that matter to you — including LGBTQIA+ affirming practice, neurodiversity-affirming support, or specific lived experience
- Practical preferences — therapist gender, availability, and any other factors that matter to you
All therapists we work with are qualified and registered with appropriate UK professional bodies, and we will confirm the most suitable options with you before any sessions begin.
Professional standards across our team
Hope Therapy & Counselling Services has been operating since 2014, and we hold Organisational Membership with the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). We work in line with the NCPS Code of Ethics and BACP Good Practice, and our wider clinical standards include:
- Qualified, professionally registered therapists across the team — registrations vary per therapist and are confirmed before matching
- Ongoing clinical supervision in line with professional body requirements
- Continuing professional development to maintain and develop practice
- Clear confidentiality standards, with limits explained before sessions begin
- Client-centred, non-judgemental and inclusive practice across all areas of identity and experience
- Founder-led clinical oversight from Ian Stockbridge — MBACP (Senior Accredited) – who continues to lead the practice and oversee its standards
Whether you choose face-to-face counselling near you or online therapy from anywhere in the UK, you can expect to be matched with a therapist who is appropriately qualified and suited to the support you are looking for.

Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is trauma therapy?
Trauma therapy refers to a range of specialist, evidence-based approaches — including EMDR, trauma-focused CBT, and trauma-informed counselling — designed to help people process difficult or distressing experiences. Rather than asking you to talk through events in detail, trauma therapy focuses on helping your nervous system recover, rebuilding a sense of safety, and enabling you to move forward without the past dictating the present.
What is the difference between PTSD and complex PTSD?
PTSD typically develops after a single traumatic event — an accident, assault, or medical emergency. Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) develops from prolonged or repeated trauma, such as childhood abuse or domestic abuse, and tends to involve additional difficulties with emotional regulation, self-worth, and relationships. Both are treatable with the right support. You can find more detail on our Complex PTSD page.
Is EMDR available online?
Yes. EMDR is delivered effectively both online and face-to-face at Hope Therapy. Online sessions take place via Zoom, and our therapists are trained to deliver the full EMDR protocol remotely. Many clients value the accessibility of online EMDR — specialist trauma support from anywhere in the UK. Face-to-face EMDR sessions are also available in locations across England.
Do I have to talk about what happened in detail?
No — and this is often a relief for people who are concerned about starting therapy. Many effective trauma approaches, including EMDR, do not require you to retell or relive events in detail. Your therapist will always work at your pace, beginning with stabilisation and safety before any deeper work. Nothing happens until you are ready.
How long does trauma therapy take?
It varies significantly. Some people find meaningful relief in 8–12 sessions. Complex or longstanding trauma typically requires longer-term work. Your therapist will discuss timelines openly with you, and you are always in control of the pace and direction of the work.
What does the free consultation involve?
It is a brief, relaxed 15-minute conversation. You do not need to share details of what happened — we simply want to understand what kind of support you are looking for, answer your questions, and explore whether we are the right fit. There is no pressure and no obligation.
Still have questions? The free consultation is the easiest way to ask them — no pressure to book sessions.

“Having worked for more than 25 years in senior management, I saw the same thing repeatedly — people struggling with mental health and relationship challenges, and so often struggling to access the right support when it was needed. It was out of this recognition of human need that Hope was born.”
Ian Stockbridge founded Hope Therapy after 25+ years leading large commercial teams – watching colleagues carry stress, anxiety, and personal difficulty with nowhere to turn. He retrained rigorously, now holding Senior Accredited status with both the BACP and NCPS, alongside SCoPEd Band C — the highest independent competence verification in the UK counselling profession.
He remains a practising therapist, clinical supervisor, published author of PMDD Uncovered, and co-presenter of The Talk Room Podcast. Hope Therapy was built on the things he saw were most broken – and designed, from the ground up, to do better.
