Self-help that actually helps — written by people who understand
There is a significant gap between feeling something is wrong and feeling ready to pick up the phone to a therapist. These guides exist to help close that gap — giving you something useful to read, reflect on, and work with, in your own time and at your own pace.
Every guide here has been produced by Hope Therapy’s qualified counsellors and clinical team, drawing on decades of combined practice. They are written in plain language, designed to be genuinely informative, and free from the kind of hollow reassurance that too often passes for support.
They are not a substitute for therapy. But they are a starting point — and sometimes, a starting point is exactly what you need.
Please note: These resources are for informational and self-help purposes only. They are not a substitute for professional mental health support. If you are in crisis or experiencing significant distress, please contact the Samaritans on 116 123 or text SHOUT to 85258. In an emergency, call 999.

Each guide is a standalone resource. You can download one, or all of them. No sign-up, no email address, no obligation.
Rebuilding Trust After Betrayal
A sensitive, dual-perspective guide for both the person betrayed and the person who caused it. Covers the psychology of betrayal trauma, the immediate aftermath, the decision to stay or leave, what genuine repair actually requires, managing triggers and intrusive thoughts, intimacy after betrayal, and how to heal if you choose to separate. Draws on research by Shirley Glass and John Gottman.
Sleep & Mental Health
A practical, evidence-informed guide to the two-way connection between sleep and mental wellbeing. Covers the science of sleep cycles and circadian rhythm, how conditions including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and ADHD affect sleep, CBT-I techniques, managing the anxious mind at bedtime, and habits that harm sleep. Includes a self-assessment checklist and reflection exercises.
About These Resources
Written by qualified counsellors — not content writers
Every guide and article produced by Hope Therapy is created or reviewed by members of our clinical team — qualified, registered therapists with years of real-world practice. We are an NCPS Organisational Member. Our founder, Ian Stockbridge, holds Senior Accredited status with both the BACP and NCPS, and SCoPEd Band C — the highest independent competency verification in the UK counselling profession.
We produce these resources because we believe that accessible, honest information makes a genuine difference — whether someone is trying to understand their own experience, support someone they love, or decide whether therapy might be right for them.
These resources are for informational and self-help purposes only. They are not a substitute for professional mental health support. All content requires human clinical review before publication.

Common Questions
Questions about the free guides
Are these guides really free — no email required?
Yes. Every guide on this page is completely free to download. You do not need to provide an email address, create an account, or sign up to anything. We have made them freely available because we think this kind of information should be accessible to anyone who needs it.
Can these guides replace therapy?
No — and we would not want you to think they can. These guides can help you understand what you are experiencing, think about it more clearly, and take some initial steps. But they are not a substitute for professional support, and they are not intended to be. If you are finding things difficult, please do consider speaking with a therapist — and our free consultation is a good way to start.
Who are these guides written for?
They are written primarily for adults who are trying to understand their own experience — or the experience of someone close to them. They are written in accessible language and do not assume any prior knowledge of mental health or therapy. Some guides (such as the LGBTQIA+ Wellbeing guide) are written specifically for particular communities, though anyone may find them useful.
Will more guides be added?
We are continuing to add to this resource library. Topics currently in development include grief and bereavement, anger, and self-esteem. Follow us on YouTube or check back here for updates.
What if I need support right now?
If you are in crisis or need immediate support, please do not rely on a downloadable guide. Contact the Samaritans on 116 123 (free, 24/7), text SHOUT to 85258, or call 999 if you or someone else is in immediate danger. If you would like to speak with a Hope Therapy counsellor, our free 15-minute consultation is available to book at any time.

MBACP & SNCPS Senior Accredited
“Having worked for more than 25 years in senior management, I saw the same thing repeatedly — people struggling with mental health and relationship challenges, and so often struggling to access the right support when it was needed. It was out of this recognition of human need that Hope was born.”
Ian Stockbridge founded Hope Therapy after 25+ years leading large commercial teams — watching colleagues carry stress, anxiety, and personal difficulty with nowhere to turn. He has sat in meetings where the conversation could not happen, and in rooms where someone was quietly falling apart. He understands what organisations face, and he understands what employees need.
After retraining, Ian now holds Senior Accredited status with both the BACP and NCPS, alongside SCoPEd Band C — the highest independent competence verification in the UK counselling profession. He remains a practising therapist, clinical supervisor, and published author.
