If you are looking for anxiety therapy online or an anxiety therapist near you, the most important thing is finding someone who genuinely understands how anxiety works — and who is the right fit for you specifically. Anxiety counselling is not about being given a list of techniques to try or being told to think more positively. It is a confidential, one-to-one process where you work with a qualified therapist to understand what is behind your anxiety — the patterns, the triggers, and the experiences that may be keeping it in place.

Your therapist will take time to understand your specific experience. Anxiety presents differently for everyone — what works for one person may not be right for another. Some people experience anxiety primarily as worried thoughts, while others feel it in their body first: chest tightness, nausea, shaking, or a constant background hum of tension. The right approach depends on how your anxiety shows up and what is driving it. That is why we take genuine care to match you with a therapist whose experience and way of working are suited to what you need.

Sessions typically last 50 minutes and take place weekly, though frequency can be adjusted as the work progresses. Many of our clients access anxiety counselling online via Zoom, which means you can receive support from anywhere in the UK without needing to travel. Face-to-face sessions are also available in locations across England where we have team members. Whichever format you choose, the therapeutic relationship and the quality of the work remain the same — research consistently shows that online therapy can be as effective as in-person sessions for anxiety.

There is no fixed programme and no set number of sessions. Some people find that a focused block of six to twelve sessions gives them what they need. Others prefer to work over a longer period, particularly where anxiety is connected to deeper patterns or past experiences. Your therapist will review progress with you regularly and the pace is always guided by what feels right for you. If at any point you feel the approach is not working, we can adjust — or match you with a different therapist at no additional cost.

The approaches we use for anxiety — and why they work

We offer several evidence-based approaches to anxiety, and the right one depends on your individual situation. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends talking therapies as a primary treatment for anxiety disorders, with CBT receiving the strongest evidence base. We also recognise that different people respond to different approaches — which is why we offer a range, and discuss what might suit you during your free consultation.

Counselling provides a space to explore what is behind your anxiety at your own pace. Person-centred and integrative counselling focuses on understanding your experience — not just the anxiety itself, but the emotions, relationships, and experiences that may be connected to it. This approach can be particularly valuable for anxious attachment, relationship anxiety, and anxiety that is tangled up with other emotional difficulties. For many people, simply being able to talk openly about what they have been carrying — without judgement or being rushed toward solutions — is where real change begins.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) takes a more structured approach. It helps you identify the specific thought patterns and behaviours that maintain your anxiety, and develop practical strategies for responding differently. CBT is well-researched and widely recommended for generalised anxiety, health anxietysocial anxiety, and panic disorder. It can also address the physical symptoms of anxiety by helping you understand the feedback loop between anxious thoughts and bodily responses.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) can be particularly effective when anxiety is rooted in past experiences or trauma. It works by helping the brain reprocess memories that may be keeping your nervous system in a state of high alert. This can be valuable for anxiety that started after a specific event, or for people whose anxiety is linked to relationship trauma.

Mindfulness-based approaches (MBCT) help you develop a different relationship with anxious thoughts and physical sensations — noticing them without being pulled into them. This can be especially helpful for people who experience a constant background level of worry rather than acute episodes.

What the first session looks like

Your first session is about getting to know each other. Your therapist will take time to understand what has brought you to counselling, how anxiety is showing up in your life, and what you are hoping to get from the process. There is no script, no assessment form, and nothing you have to share before you are ready.

Many people feel nervous before their first session — particularly when anxiety is the reason they are coming. That is completely normal. You do not need to have prepared anything or know what you want to say. Part of the skill of a good therapist is helping you find the words for what you have been carrying.

Your therapist will explain how confidentiality works. Sessions are confidential in line with professional ethical standards. There are some limited circumstances in which confidentiality may need to be reviewed — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm — and these will be explained clearly before the work begins.

By the end of the first session, you will have a clearer sense of whether this therapist feels like the right fit. If it does not feel right, we will find someone else — at no additional cost.

Approaches we offer for anxiety

Different approaches work for different people. Here are the ones our therapists most commonly use for anxiety.

Our booking team and your therapist will discuss which approach — or combination — feels most appropriate for what you are bringing. You do not need to know which is right before you start.

Real experiences

I was matched with a therapist who really understood anxiety. She didn’t rush me or give me a list of things to try — she helped me understand what was actually going on underneath.

How it works

Three simple steps. No pressure, no obligation.

1

Book a free consultation

A relaxed 15-minute conversation with a member of our team. We listen to what has been going on and answer any questions you have. You can do this from home — by phone or online.

2

We find the right therapist

Based on what you tell us, we carefully match you with a therapist from our team of 90+ who has the right experience and approach for your needs. This is not random — it is a considered process.

3

Begin your sessions

Start your sessions online from wherever you feel comfortable. Your therapist will help you understand the patterns driving your anxiety and develop a different relationship with uncertainty — at a pace that feels right for you.

Most clients hear back from us the same working day, and typically begin sessions within a week of the free consultation — depending on your preferences and therapist availability.

How we match you with the right anxiety therapist

Choosing a therapist is a personal decision, and we take time to get the match right.

A careful match, not a long list

Therapist availability changes from week to week, so rather than asking you to choose from a directory, we take time during your free 15-minute consultation to understand what you are looking for — and then match you with a therapist suited to your needs.

During the consultation, we will ask about:

  • What you would like the work to focus on, and any specific concerns you would like support with
  • Whether you would prefer face-to-face counselling, online sessions, or a combination of the two
  • Any preferences around therapy approach (counselling, CBT, EMDR, hypnotherapy, mindfulness, ACT, compassion focused therapy and others)
  • Day and time availability that works around your life
  • Any specialisms that matter to you — for example LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy, neurodiversity-affirming support, or particular life experiences
  • Practical preferences — for example therapist gender, age range, or shared lived experience where that matters to you

All therapists we work with are qualified and registered with appropriate UK professional bodies, and we will confirm the most suitable options with you before any sessions begin.

Professional standards across our team

Hope Therapy & Counselling Services has been operating since 2014, and we hold Organisational Membership with the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). We work in line with the NCPS Code of Ethics and BACP Good Practice, and our wider clinical standards include:

  • Qualified, professionally registered therapists across the team — registrations vary per therapist and are confirmed before matching
  • Ongoing clinical supervision in line with professional body requirements
  • Continuing professional development to maintain and develop practice
  • Clear confidentiality standards, with limits explained before sessions begin
  • Client-centred, non-judgemental and inclusive practice across all areas of identity and experience
  • Founder-led clinical oversight from Ian Stockbridge — MBACP (Senior Accredited) – who continues to lead the practice and oversee its standards

Whether you choose face-to-face counselling near you or online therapy from anywhere in the UK, you can expect to be matched with a therapist who is appropriately qualified and suited to the support you are looking for.

Built by someone who saw the need from the inside

Ian Stockbridge - Founder & Counsellor, Hope Therapy & Counselling

SCoPEd Band C

MBACP & SNCPS Senior Accredited

“Having worked for more than 25 years in senior management, I saw the same thing repeatedly — people struggling with mental health and relationship challenges, and so often struggling to access the right support when it was needed. It was out of this recognition of human need that Hope was born.”

Ian Stockbridge founded Hope Therapy after 25+ years leading large commercial teams – watching colleagues carry stress, anxiety, and personal difficulty with nowhere to turn. He retrained rigorously, now holding Senior Accredited status with both the BACP and NCPS, alongside SCoPEd Band C — the highest independent competence verification in the UK counselling profession.

He remains a practising therapist, clinical supervisor, published author of PMDD Uncovered, and co-presenter of The Talk Room Podcast. Hope Therapy was built on the things he saw were most broken – and designed, from the ground up, to do better.
