Welcome Guide
Welcome to Hope Therapy & Counselling Services. Taking the step to begin therapy is an important and courageous decision, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. This guide will help you understand what to expect during your first session, so you feel prepared and comfortable as you begin your therapeutic journey.
How to Prepare?
Being prepared for your first session can help ease any nervousness and ensure you make the most of your time with your therapist. Here’s what you can do in advance:
- For in-person sessions: Arrive 5-10 minutes early to allow yourself time to settle in.
- For online sessions: Log in 3-5 minutes early to test your internet connection and audio setup.
- Have a notepad or journal handy to jot down any key points or thoughts before, during, or after the session.
- Payment should be made a minimum of 48 hours before the session.
- Consider making a brief list of topics or concerns you’d like to discuss (this is optional, but it can help structure the session and make you feel more at ease).
- Take a few deep breaths and remind yourself that this is a safe, non-judgmental space designed to support you.
For Online Sessions
To ensure a smooth experience, follow these steps:
- Find a private, quiet space where you won’t be interrupted.
- Test your device’s camera and microphone to ensure they are working properly.
- Ensure you have a stable internet connection to avoid disruptions.
- Use headphones if you prefer better audio quality and privacy.
- Keep your phone nearby in case of any technical difficulties.
During Your First Session
Your first session is an opportunity for your therapist to get to know you and understand your needs. Here’s what to expect:
Welcome and Introduction
- Your therapist will introduce themselves and explain their approach to therapy.
- They will discuss confidentiality, its importance, and its legal/ethical limits (e.g., safeguarding concerns).
- You will review and complete any necessary paperwork or consent forms.
- Your therapist will explain how therapy works any initial questions.
Getting to Know You
- Your therapist will ask about what brings you to therapy and what challenges you are facing.
- They may explore your personal background, relationships, work, and past experiences relevant to your concerns.
- This is your space—share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. There’s no pressure to open up immediately.
Initial Assessment
- Your therapist may ask structured or open-ended questions to gain a deeper understanding of your situation.
- They may explore your therapy goals, whether they are short-term (e.g., managing anxiety) or long-term (e.g., processing past trauma).
- You are welcome to ask any questions about the therapeutic process.
- Together, you and your therapist will start shaping a plan for your therapy journey.
Planning Forward
- You may discuss the most suitable therapeutic approach for your needs (e.g., CBT, EMDR, mindfulness-based therapy).
- Your therapist may discuss a session frequency that best supports your goals (weekly, fortnightly, etc.).
- You’ll have the opportunity to schedule your next session.
- If needed, your therapist may provide immediate coping strategies or exercises to practice before your next session.
