Description
What individual supervision is
Supervision is not optional — it is a professional and ethical requirement for all practising counsellors, whether qualified or in training. Individual supervision is a one-to-one relationship between a practitioner and an experienced supervisor, providing a confidential, structured space in which to reflect on casework, explore difficulties, and develop as a practitioner.
Unlike group supervision, individual supervision is entirely focused on you and your practice. There is no sharing of time with other practitioners, no group dynamic to navigate, and no need to wait for your turn to bring what matters most. The whole session is yours — and your supervisor’s attention is entirely on your work, your development, and what you are carrying.
For many practitioners, individual supervision is the most valuable form of professional support available. It is where the most complex, sensitive, and ethically demanding aspects of practice can be explored with the depth and privacy they require.
How the session works
Each session runs for 50 to 60 minutes and is facilitated by a senior Hope Therapy supervisor with significant experience in clinical practice and practitioner development. You bring what is most alive in your practice — casework that is challenging, situations that have unsettled you, ethical questions you are sitting with, or patterns you are noticing in your work. Your supervisor will work with you to explore what you are bringing with skill, care, and professional rigour.
Sessions are conducted in full accordance with the NCPS Code of Ethics and ethical framework. All client material is discussed without identifying information, in line with ethical practice.
Sessions are available online via a secure video platform, or face-to-face subject to supervisor availability and your location. Face-to-face availability will be confirmed when your session is arranged.
Who this is for
Individual supervision sessions are open to both qualified counsellors in practice and trainee counsellors on placement. Whether you are an experienced practitioner looking for a reflective space focused entirely on your work, or a trainee building the supervised hours required for your qualification, individual supervision offers a structured and professionally grounded environment in which to do that work.
If you are a trainee counsellor on placement with Hope Therapy, your supervisor will advise whether individual supervision is appropriate for your current stage of training and how it fits alongside any group supervision requirements.
Individual versus group supervision
Individual and group supervision serve different purposes and suit different practitioners at different points in their development. Individual supervision offers depth, privacy, and undivided supervisory attention. Group supervision offers peer learning, shared reflection, and the professional richness that comes from hearing how others approach similar challenges.
Many practitioners find that a combination of both works well — and where that is the case, your supervisor will be able to advise on how to structure your supervision in a way that meets both your professional requirements and your developmental needs.
Confidentiality within supervision
Supervision is a confidential professional relationship. What is discussed in your sessions is confidential to you and to Hope Therapy. Client material is discussed without identifying information, in line with ethical practice. There are limited circumstances where confidentiality within supervision may need to change — for example, if a serious safeguarding concern arises — and your supervisor will explain these clearly at the outset of your work together.
A note on supervision hours
If you are a registered or registrant-track member of the NCPS or BACP, individual supervision sessions count toward your required supervision hours. You should verify the specific requirements for your membership grade and context with your professional body and, where applicable, your training provider, as requirements vary.
