Description
What hypnotherapy is
Hypnotherapy uses a state of focused relaxation — sometimes called a trance state — to help you access a quieter, more receptive part of your mind. In this state, the critical, analytical part of the mind becomes less active, and it becomes possible to explore thoughts, feelings, habits, and patterns in a way that is often difficult in ordinary waking consciousness.
It is not what most people imagine from television or stage hypnosis. You are not unconscious. You are not under anyone’s control. You remain fully aware throughout the session and can end it at any point. Most people describe the experience as deeply relaxing — similar in some ways to the feeling of being absorbed in something so completely that the world around you fades into the background.
Hypnotherapy is used to support a wide range of difficulties — anxiety, phobias, unwanted habits, low confidence, sleep difficulties, and stress among them. It works by helping the mind find new ways of responding to situations and experiences that have previously felt fixed or automatic.
What hypnotherapy is not
Hypnotherapy is not a medical treatment and is not a substitute for medical or psychiatric care. It is not appropriate for everyone, and your therapist will discuss with you during your consultation whether it is a suitable approach for your situation. If a different approach would serve you better, your therapist will be honest with you about that.
Hypnotherapy is also not covered by our NCPS Organisational Membership. Our NCPS membership covers our counselling and psychotherapy services. Hypnotherapy is an adjunctive therapy and is delivered by practitioners who hold separate, relevant hypnotherapy training and/or experience. This distinction will be explained clearly during your consultation.
What happens in a session
Your hypnotherapist will begin by talking with you — understanding what has brought you to hypnotherapy, what you are hoping to address, and what you have already tried. This is not a brief formality. Understanding your situation clearly is essential to how the session is shaped.
When the hypnotherapy itself begins, your therapist will guide you into a state of focused relaxation using a combination of spoken language, imagery, and breathing. Once you are in that state, your therapist will work with you — using suggestion, visualisation, or other techniques suited to what you are bringing — to begin to shift the patterns or responses you want to change.
After the hypnotherapy, your therapist will bring you gently back to full waking awareness and spend time with you reflecting on what was experienced. Most people leave a session feeling calm, rested, and clearer than when they arrived.
Your therapist
Hypnotherapy at Hope Therapy London is delivered by practitioners with relevant hypnotherapy training and/or experience. When we match you with a hypnotherapist, we take into account what you have told us about your situation, your preferences, and what you are hoping to address. If the match doesn’t feel right, we’ll find someone who does — at no extra cost.
London sessions — face-to-face and online
This product is for hypnotherapy in London. Face-to-face sessions are available at our London location, details of which will be confirmed during your consultation. Online sessions are available UK-wide for those who prefer to work remotely — hypnotherapy translates well to online delivery, and your therapist is experienced in working via video platform.
If you are based outside London and are specifically looking for face-to-face hypnotherapy, please get in touch and we will discuss what options may be available in your area.
Confidentiality
Everything discussed in your hypnotherapy sessions is confidential. There are limited circumstances where this may need to change — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else — and your therapist will explain these clearly before your sessions begin, in line with professional ethical standards.
Not sure yet?
If you haven’t already spoken with us, we’d encourage you to book a free 15-minute consultation before purchasing. It’s an informal conversation — no commitment, no pressure — just a chance to ask questions, find out more about how hypnotherapy works, and make sure we are matching you with the right therapist. If you’ve already had your consultation and you’re ready to go, you’re in the right place.
A note on what hypnotherapy is and is not
Hypnotherapy is not a quick fix, and it does not work in the same way for everyone. What it can offer is a focused, professionally delivered approach to difficulties that many people find makes a meaningful difference — particularly where the roots of difficulty lie in habitual patterns of thought or response that have felt difficult to shift through other means. Many people find hypnotherapy makes a real and lasting difference. What that difference looks like will be particular to you.
