Description

What coaching is — and what it isn’t

Coaching is a structured, goal-oriented process focused on where you are now, where you want to be, and what might be getting in the way. Unlike counselling, it is not primarily concerned with exploring the past or working through emotional difficulties — it is forward-looking, practical, and action-oriented.

That said, the boundary between personal growth and professional development is rarely clean. Many people find that life coaching and executive coaching overlap in meaningful ways — patterns that show up at work often show up elsewhere too. Your coach will work with you to understand what you’re bringing and shape the sessions accordingly.

If you are unsure whether coaching or counselling is the right fit for your situation, please book a free consultation before purchasing. We will always be honest with you about which approach is likely to be most helpful — and if counselling is more appropriate, we will say so.

Life coaching

Life coaching is for people who are navigating change, feeling stuck, or looking to gain clarity on what they want and how to get there. It might involve exploring values, priorities, and goals — or working through a specific decision or transition that feels difficult to move through alone.

It is not therapy. It does not treat mental health conditions. If what you are experiencing feels more like distress than direction, counselling is likely to be a better starting point, and we can help you access that instead.

Executive and work-based coaching

Executive and work-based coaching focuses on professional performance, leadership, career development, and workplace challenges. It is suited to people managing teams, navigating organisational change, preparing for new responsibilities, or dealing with the pressures that professional life can bring.

Sessions are structured around your specific professional context and goals, and your coach will bring both skill and discretion to material that may be sensitive or confidential in a workplace sense.

Your coach

Hope Therapy coaching sessions are delivered by practitioners who hold relevant coaching qualifications or who are qualified counsellors with specific coaching training and experience. When we match you with a coach, we take into account the nature of your goals — whether life or work-based — your preferences, and the kind of support you’re looking for. If the match doesn’t feel right, we’ll find someone who does — at no extra cost.

An important note about professional registration

Hope Therapy is an Organisational Member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). Our NCPS membership covers our counselling and psychotherapy services. Coaching is an adjunctive therapy and is not covered by our NCPS Organisational Membership. Our coaches hold separate appropriate qualifications and/or experience and, where applicable, membership of relevant coaching professional bodies. This will be made clear during your consultation.

How sessions work

Sessions run for 50 to 60 minutes and are available online via a secure video platform, or face-to-face depending on location and availability. Most people find a regular weekly or fortnightly session works well, though this is always discussed and agreed with you at the outset.

Confidentiality

Everything discussed in your coaching sessions is confidential. There are limited circumstances where this may need to change — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else — and your coach will explain these clearly before your sessions begin. For executive coaching, your coach will also discuss with you at the outset how confidentiality works in the context of any organisational relationship, if relevant.

Not sure yet?

If you haven’t already spoken with us, we’d encourage you to book a free 15-minute consultation before purchasing. It’s an informal conversation — no commitment, no pressure — just a chance to establish what kind of support is right for you and make sure we’re the right fit. If you’ve already had your consultation and you’re ready to go, you’re in the right place.
