What couples counselling involves

Couples counselling is a structured form of therapy where both partners attend sessions together with a qualified therapist. Unlike individual therapy, the focus is on the relationship itself — the patterns between you, the ways you communicate (or do not), and the dynamics that are keeping things stuck.

Your therapist is not there to decide who is right. They are there to help you both see the relationship more clearly — the unspoken assumptions, the automatic reactions, the ways each of you may be contributing to the difficulty without realising it. That kind of perspective is almost impossible to gain from inside the relationship, which is why having a trained third person in the room can make such a difference. Most couples say that the therapist noticed things in the first session that they had been unable to see in years of trying on their own.

Sessions typically last 50 minutes, though extended sessions are available for couples who find the standard length too short to get into the deeper work. Most couples attend weekly or fortnightly, and sessions are available online via Zoom or face-to-face at locations across England. Online couples counselling works well for many people — it removes the logistics of travelling together, and some couples find it easier to talk openly from the comfort of their own home. The pace and format are discussed during your free consultation, so you know exactly what to expect before you begin.

What couples counselling can help with

Couples come to us for many different reasons. Some are in crisis — dealing with infidelity, a betrayal of trust, or a decision about whether to stay or go. Others have been drifting apart for a long time and want to understand why the connection has faded. Some want help with a specific issue — communication breakdown, conflict about parenting, differences in values or life direction. And some simply want to strengthen a relationship that is good but not quite where they want it to be. Whatever brings you, the starting point is the same: a genuine willingness to try something different.

We work with couples at every stage — including those who have decided to separate and want support in doing that as constructively as possible, particularly when children are involved. There is no minimum level of difficulty required, and no issue that is too small to bring. If it matters to you, it matters. We also welcome couples of all backgrounds, orientations, and relationship structures — including LGBTQIA+ couples and those in non-traditional relationships.

Common areas we support include communication and conflict, trust and infidelity, intimacy and connection, relationship trauma, parenting disagreements, blended family challenges, life transitions, and the emotional impact of separation or divorce.

We also offer individual relationship counselling for people who want to work on relationship patterns without their partner present, and pre-marital counselling for couples who want to build a strong foundation before they commit.

How sessions work

Couples counselling works best when both partners are willing to attend — but it is common for one person to be more hesitant than the other. That hesitation is understandable — opening up about your relationship to a stranger can feel daunting. The free 15-minute consultation is designed to address that: it is a brief, relaxed conversation where we listen to what is going on, answer questions, and help both of you feel comfortable with the process before committing to anything.

During the consultation, we take time to understand your situation and match you with a couples therapist suited to your needs. Our team includes therapists experienced in trauma-informed couples work, communication-focused approaches, integrative couples therapy, and working with LGBTQIA+ relationships and neurodiverse couples. We do not leave the choice entirely to you — we actively guide the matching process, because getting the therapist right is one of the most important factors in whether couples work succeeds.

In the first session, your therapist will explore what has brought you to counselling, what you are both hoping to work on, and how you would like things to be different. There is no script, no exercises to complete beforehand, and no expectation that you arrive having already agreed on what the problem is — in fact, most couples have quite different views on that, and that is perfectly fine. Many couples find that simply being heard — by each other, with a therapist holding the space — is where things begin to shift.

Sessions are confidential. In couples work, confidentiality applies to what is shared in the room together. There are limited circumstances where this may need to change — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm — and your therapist will explain these clearly before you begin.

Approaches we use in couples work

Your couples therapist will draw on the approach that best fits your situation. Here are the main frameworks we use.

Real experiences

We had almost given up. Having a therapist who could see what was really going on between us — not just what we were arguing about — changed everything.

We came in barely speaking. Within a few sessions, we were having conversations we had avoided for years — and it did not feel as frightening as we thought it would.

The matching process was brilliant. They took time to understand what we needed and found us a therapist who was exactly right. That initial conversation made all the difference.

What to expect

Starting couples counselling can feel like a big step — but we make it as straightforward as possible. Here is how it works.

1

Free consultation

A brief, relaxed 15-minute conversation with a member of our booking team. We listen to what is going on and explore whether counselling could help. No pressure, no obligation.

2

Matched with a therapist

Based on your needs and preferences, we carefully match you with one of our 90+ qualified therapists. If it doesn’t feel right, we’ll find someone else — at no extra cost.

3

Your first session

Your therapist will take time to understand your situation and what you are hoping to work on. There is no rush, no script, and nothing you have to share before you are ready.

Most clients hear back from us the same working day, and typically begin sessions within a week of the free consultation — depending on your preferences and therapist availability.

How we match you with the right couples therapist

Choosing a therapist is a personal decision, and we take time to get the match right.

A careful match, not a long list

Therapist availability changes from week to week, so rather than asking you to choose from a directory, we take time during your free 15-minute consultation to understand what you are looking for — and then match you with a therapist suited to your needs.

During the consultation, we will ask about:

  • What you would like the work to focus on, and any specific concerns you would like support with
  • Whether you would prefer face-to-face counselling, online sessions, or a combination of the two
  • Any preferences around therapy approach (counselling, CBT, EMDR, hypnotherapy, mindfulness, ACT, compassion focused therapy and others)
  • Day and time availability that works around your life
  • Any specialisms that matter to you — for example LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy, neurodiversity-affirming support, or particular life experiences
  • Practical preferences — for example therapist gender, age range, or shared lived experience where that matters to you

All therapists we work with are qualified and registered with appropriate UK professional bodies, and we will confirm the most suitable options with you before any sessions begin.

Professional standards across our team

Hope Therapy & Counselling Services has been operating since 2014, and we hold Organisational Membership with the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). We work in line with the NCPS Code of Ethics and BACP Good Practice, and our wider clinical standards include:

  • Qualified, professionally registered therapists across the team — registrations vary per therapist and are confirmed before matching
  • Ongoing clinical supervision in line with professional body requirements
  • Continuing professional development to maintain and develop practice
  • Clear confidentiality standards, with limits explained before sessions begin
  • Client-centred, non-judgemental and inclusive practice across all areas of identity and experience
  • Founder-led clinical oversight from Ian Stockbridge — MBACP (Senior Accredited) – who continues to lead the practice and oversee its standards

Whether you choose face-to-face counselling near you or online therapy from anywhere in the UK, you can expect to be matched with a therapist who is appropriately qualified and suited to the support you are looking for.

Common Questions

What happens in couples counselling?

Both partners attend together and work with a qualified therapist. Sessions provide a structured space to explore the difficulties in your relationship, understand each other’s perspectives, and develop new ways of communicating. Your therapist is not there to take sides — they help you both see the patterns that are keeping you stuck.

Do we both need to want to come?

It helps if both partners are willing, but it is common for one person to be more hesitant. The free consultation helps the more reluctant partner feel comfortable. If only one of you is willing, individual relationship counselling is also available.

What if we have already tried couples counselling?

A different therapist or approach can produce a very different result. We take time to match you with someone suited to your specific situation — and if it does not feel right, we will find someone else at no extra cost.

How much does couples counselling cost?

Couples counselling starts from £85 per 50-minute session. Extended sessions and session packages are also available. We may be able to offer sessions at a reduced rate — just ask during your free consultation.

Is couples counselling available online?

Yes. All of our couples therapists offer sessions online via Zoom. Many couples find online sessions work well — you can attend from home, which can feel less daunting. Face-to-face sessions are also available across England.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies. Some couples find that 6 to 8 sessions gives them what they need. Others benefit from longer-term work. Your therapist will discuss this with you early on and review progress together. There is no fixed commitment.

Still have questions? The free consultation is the easiest way to ask them — no pressure to book sessions.

SCoPEd Band C

MBACP & SNCPS Senior Accredited

“Having worked for more than 25 years in senior management, I saw the same thing repeatedly — people struggling with mental health and relationship challenges, and so often struggling to access the right support when it was needed. It was out of this recognition of human need that Hope was born.”

Ian Stockbridge founded Hope Therapy after 25+ years leading large commercial teams – watching colleagues carry stress, anxiety, and personal difficulty with nowhere to turn. He retrained rigorously, now holding Senior Accredited status with both the BACP and NCPS, alongside SCoPEd Band C — the highest independent competence verification in the UK counselling profession.

He remains a practising therapist, clinical supervisor, published author of PMDD Uncovered, and co-presenter of The Talk Room Podcast. Hope Therapy was built on the things he saw were most broken – and designed, from the ground up, to do better.
