What pre-marital counselling is

Pre-marital counselling is a proactive form of couples therapy designed for people preparing for marriage or civil partnership. Unlike traditional couples counselling — which often begins when something has gone wrong — pre-marital work starts from a position of strength. The aim is to build on what is already working, address potential areas of difficulty before they become problems, and develop the communication skills that will sustain your relationship over the years ahead.

It is not about finding fault or testing whether your relationship is “ready.” Most couples who come to us for pre-marital counselling have a strong relationship and want to make it even stronger. They recognise that a wedding is the beginning of a marriage, not the end of a courtship — and that the transition from partners to spouses brings expectations, assumptions, and pressures that are worth exploring before they arrive. A wedding is a single day. A marriage is the rest of your life together. Pre-marital counselling is about making sure you are both prepared for what that actually involves — the beautiful parts and the difficult ones.

Sessions are shaped by what matters most to you. There is no fixed curriculum — your therapist works with the issues and questions that are relevant to your relationship, your backgrounds, and your plans for the future. Whether you have been together for two years or twenty, pre-marital counselling can help you start married life with a deeper understanding of each other and a shared language for navigating what lies ahead. It is also available for couples entering a civil partnership — the process and the value are exactly the same.

What pre-marital counselling typically covers

Every couple is different, but common topics include how you each handle conflict — whether you tend to argue, withdraw, or avoid — and how to develop healthier patterns before they become entrenched. Many couples also explore expectations around finances, career, family planning, roles and responsibilities, and how much time and energy you expect to give to each other versus your individual lives. These are conversations that most couples never have explicitly — and the lack of that conversation is often where difficulty begins.

The influence of your families of origin is often one of the most valuable areas to explore. The way your parents handled conflict, money, affection, and decision-making shapes your assumptions about how a marriage should work — often without you realising it. When two people bring different models into the same marriage, misunderstanding is almost inevitable unless those models are made visible and discussed. You might assume that your partner shares your approach to saving, to holidays, to how often you visit family — only to discover, after the wedding, that their assumptions are completely different. Pre-marital counselling brings those assumptions to the surface while there is still time to address them calmly.

Other areas include communication styles, how you will support each other’s mental health, maintaining emotional and physical intimacy over the long term, navigating relationships with in-laws, and how you will handle the inevitable moments when the marriage feels difficult. These important conversations are not always comfortable — but having them before you are in crisis is precisely the point.

How sessions work

The free 15-minute consultation is where you start. We listen to what you are both hoping to get from the process, answer any questions you might have, and match you with a therapist who is a good fit for you both. There is no pressure, no obligation, and no expectation that you have specific concerns before you call — the consultation is simply a chance to see whether we feel right.

Most couples find that 4 to 6 sessions covers the key areas, though some choose to continue if deeper themes emerge. A session package of 6 sessions is available at a reduced rate, which many couples find is the right balance of depth and practicality. Sessions are typically 50 minutes, with extended sessions available if you prefer more time. Most couples attend weekly or fortnightly in the months before the wedding, though some begin earlier and work at a slower pace.

Pre-marital counselling is available online via Zoom — which many couples find convenient, particularly alongside the demands of wedding planning — and face-to-face at locations across England. Online sessions work well for this kind of work, remove the need to travel together, and fit easily around wedding planning. Many couples tell us they appreciated having a regular hour each week that was just about them and their relationship, rather than seating plans and invitations.

Sessions are confidential. There are limited circumstances where this may need to change — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm — and your therapist will explain these clearly before you begin.

Real experiences

We learnt more about each other in six sessions than in six years of dating. It was the best investment we made in our marriage.

Client who sought pre-marital counselling

We thought we knew everything about each other. Pre-marital counselling showed us we had assumptions we had never actually tested — and addressing them before the wedding was the smartest thing we did.

I was sceptical at first — I thought counselling was for when things go wrong. But this was proactive, practical, and genuinely fun at times. We would recommend it to any couple getting married.

What to expect

Pre-marital counselling is straightforward and positive. Here is how it works.

1

Free consultation

A brief, relaxed 15-minute conversation with a member of our booking team. We listen to what is going on and explore whether counselling could help. No pressure, no obligation.

2

Matched with a therapist

Based on your needs and preferences, we carefully match you with one of our 90+ qualified therapists. If it doesn’t feel right, we’ll find someone else — at no extra cost.

3

Your first session

Your therapist will take time to understand your situation and what you are hoping to work on. There is no rush, no script, and nothing you have to share before you are ready.

Most clients hear back from us the same working day, and typically begin sessions within a week of the free consultation — depending on your preferences and therapist availability.

How we match you with the right pre-marital counsellor

Choosing a therapist is a personal decision, and we take time to get the match right.

A careful match, not a long list

Therapist availability changes from week to week, so rather than asking you to choose from a directory, we take time during your free 15-minute consultation to understand what you are looking for — and then match you with a therapist suited to your needs.

During the consultation, we will ask about:

  • What you would like the work to focus on, and any specific concerns you would like support with
  • Whether you would prefer face-to-face counselling, online sessions, or a combination of the two
  • Any preferences around therapy approach (counselling, CBT, EMDR, hypnotherapy, mindfulness, ACT, compassion focused therapy and others)
  • Day and time availability that works around your life
  • Any specialisms that matter to you — for example LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy, neurodiversity-affirming support, or particular life experiences
  • Practical preferences — for example therapist gender, age range, or shared lived experience where that matters to you

All therapists we work with are qualified and registered with appropriate UK professional bodies, and we will confirm the most suitable options with you before any sessions begin.

Professional standards across our team

Hope Therapy & Counselling Services has been operating since 2014, and we hold Organisational Membership with the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). We work in line with the NCPS Code of Ethics and BACP Good Practice, and our wider clinical standards include:

  • Qualified, professionally registered therapists across the team — registrations vary per therapist and are confirmed before matching
  • Ongoing clinical supervision in line with professional body requirements
  • Continuing professional development to maintain and develop practice
  • Clear confidentiality standards, with limits explained before sessions begin
  • Client-centred, non-judgemental and inclusive practice across all areas of identity and experience
  • Founder-led clinical oversight from Ian Stockbridge — MBACP (Senior Accredited) – who continues to lead the practice and oversee its standards

Whether you choose face-to-face counselling near you or online therapy from anywhere in the UK, you can expect to be matched with a therapist who is appropriately qualified and suited to the support you are looking for.

Ian Stockbridge - Founder & Counsellor, Hope Therapy & Counselling

SCoPEd Band C

MBACP & SNCPS Senior Accredited

“Having worked for more than 25 years in senior management, I saw the same thing repeatedly — people struggling with mental health and relationship challenges, and so often struggling to access the right support when it was needed. It was out of this recognition of human need that Hope was born.”

Ian Stockbridge founded Hope Therapy after 25+ years leading large commercial teams – watching colleagues carry stress, anxiety, and personal difficulty with nowhere to turn. He retrained rigorously, now holding Senior Accredited status with both the BACP and NCPS, alongside SCoPEd Band C — the highest independent competence verification in the UK counselling profession.

He remains a practising therapist, clinical supervisor, published author of PMDD Uncovered, and co-presenter of The Talk Room Podcast. Hope Therapy was built on the things he saw were most broken – and designed, from the ground up, to do better.
