What individual relationship counselling is

Individual relationship counselling is one-to-one therapy focused on how you experience, navigate, and are affected by relationships. Unlike couples counselling, it does not require your partner to attend. It is your space — to explore your own patterns, process what has happened in your relationships, and develop a clearer understanding of what you need.

Many people assume that relationship counselling means both partners sitting in a room together. But a significant amount of relationship work happens individually — and for good reason. When you work on your own, there is no need to manage your partner’s reactions, no risk of the session becoming a continuation of the argument at home, and no pressure to present a united front. You can be completely honest about how you feel, what you want, and what you are afraid of. That honesty is often where the most important work begins.

Individual relationship counselling is not a lesser alternative to couples work. For many people, it is the more important one. When you understand your own patterns — why you withdraw, why you pursue, why certain dynamics feel so familiar — you change how you show up in every relationship, not just the current one. That kind of insight stays with you long after the sessions end. It is not about fixing a single relationship — it is about understanding yourself as someone who relates to other people, and becoming more intentional about how you do it.

Who individual relationship counselling is for

This kind of support is for anyone whose relationships — past, present, or future — are causing them difficulty. You might be in a relationship that feels stuck, unhealthy, or painful, and want to understand your own part in the dynamic before deciding what to do. You might have a partner who is unwilling to attend couples counselling, and want to work on things in the only way that is currently available to you.

You might be recovering from a relationship that ended badly — processing the grief, the anger, the loss of identity, or the lingering effects of toxic or narcissistic dynamics that continue to affect how you see yourself and how you relate to others. Or you might be single and noticing patterns that keep repeating — choosing emotionally unavailable partners, struggling with vulnerability, ending relationships before they get too close, or feeling trapped in dynamics that echo your childhood.

Individual relationship counselling is also valuable for people who are broadly happy in their relationship but want to understand themselves more deeply — how they handle conflict, what intimacy ;means to them, what they need in order to feel secure, and how their family of origin has shaped the way they love. These are not problems to be fixed. They are patterns to be understood — and understanding them changes everything. We welcome people of all orientations, backgrounds, and relationship structures. Whatever your experience of relationships has been, individual counselling meets you where you are.

How sessions work

The free 15-minute consultation is where you start. We listen to what is going on, understand what you are hoping to get from individual work, and match you with a therapist suited to your needs. There is no pressure and no obligation — the consultation is simply a chance to see whether we feel right.

We then match you with a therapist experienced in relationship-focused individual work. Our team includes counsellors with specific experience in attachment patterns, relationship trauma, recovery from difficult relationships, communication patterns, and working with LGBTQIA+ individuals and neurodiverse people. We take time to get the match right — because the therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in whether the work succeeds. If it does not feel right, we will find someone else at no additional cost.

Sessions are typically 50 minutes. Most people attend weekly or fortnightly, and there is no fixed commitment — the length of work depends on what you need. Some people find that a focused block of sessions gives them the clarity they were looking for. Others prefer longer-term support to work through deeper patterns. Your therapist will review progress with you regularly.

Sessions are available online via Zoom or telephone — which many people find works well for this kind of reflective individual work — and face-to-face at locations across England. If you begin with individual work and later decide that couples counselling would also be helpful, we can arrange that alongside your individual sessions or as a transition — whichever makes more sense for your situation.

Sessions are confidential. There are limited circumstances where this may need to change — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm — and your therapist will explain these clearly before you begin.

Approaches we use

Your therapist will draw on the approach that best fits your needs and what you want to explore.

Real experiences

I kept choosing the same kind of partner. Counselling helped me see the pattern — rooted in my childhood — and once I understood it, I stopped repeating it.

After a toxic relationship ended, I needed to understand what had happened and why I stayed. My counsellor helped me make sense of it — and I feel more like myself than I have in years.

What to expect

Individual relationship counselling is straightforward to begin. Here is how it works.

1

Free consultation

A brief, relaxed 15-minute conversation with a member of our booking team. We listen to what is going on and explore whether counselling could help. No pressure, no obligation.

2

Matched with a therapist

Based on your needs and preferences, we carefully match you with one of our 90+ qualified therapists. If it doesn’t feel right, we’ll find someone else — at no extra cost.

3

Your first session

Your therapist will take time to understand your situation and what you are hoping to work on. There is no rush, no script, and nothing you have to share before you are ready.

Most clients hear back from us the same working day, and typically begin sessions within a week of the free consultation — depending on your preferences and therapist availability.

How we match you with the right relationship therapist

Choosing a therapist is a personal decision, and we take time to get the match right.

A careful match, not a long list

Therapist availability changes from week to week, so rather than asking you to choose from a directory, we take time during your free 15-minute consultation to understand what you are looking for — and then match you with a therapist suited to your needs.

During the consultation, we will ask about:

  • What you would like the work to focus on, and any specific concerns you would like support with
  • Whether you would prefer face-to-face counselling, online sessions, or a combination of the two
  • Any preferences around therapy approach (counselling, CBT, EMDR, hypnotherapy, mindfulness, ACT, compassion focused therapy and others)
  • Day and time availability that works around your life
  • Any specialisms that matter to you — for example LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy, neurodiversity-affirming support, or particular life experiences
  • Practical preferences — for example therapist gender, age range, or shared lived experience where that matters to you

All therapists we work with are qualified and registered with appropriate UK professional bodies, and we will confirm the most suitable options with you before any sessions begin.

Professional standards across our team

Hope Therapy & Counselling Services has been operating since 2014, and we hold Organisational Membership with the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). We work in line with the NCPS Code of Ethics and BACP Good Practice, and our wider clinical standards include:

  • Qualified, professionally registered therapists across the team — registrations vary per therapist and are confirmed before matching
  • Ongoing clinical supervision in line with professional body requirements
  • Continuing professional development to maintain and develop practice
  • Clear confidentiality standards, with limits explained before sessions begin
  • Client-centred, non-judgemental and inclusive practice across all areas of identity and experience
  • Founder-led clinical oversight from Ian Stockbridge — MBACP (Senior Accredited) – who continues to lead the practice and oversee its standards

Whether you choose face-to-face counselling near you or online therapy from anywhere in the UK, you can expect to be matched with a therapist who is appropriately qualified and suited to the support you are looking for.

Common Questions

What is individual relationship counselling?

It is one-to-one therapeutic support focused on your relationship patterns, experiences, and difficulties. It does not require your partner to attend. It is your space to explore how relationships affect you and what you want to change.

Can individual counselling help my relationship even if my partner does not attend?

Yes. When one person changes how they communicate and respond, the dynamic between both partners often shifts — even without the other person being in the room.

What if my partner refuses to attend couples counselling?

Individual relationship counselling is a strong alternative. You can work on your own patterns, develop clarity about what you need, and build the confidence to communicate differently.

Is individual relationship counselling only for people in relationships?

No. It is equally valuable for people who are single — whether recovering from a difficult relationship, noticing patterns across past relationships, or preparing for future ones.

How much does it cost?

Individual relationship counselling starts from £65 per 50-minute session. CBT starts from £85 and EMDR from £95. We may be able to offer sessions at a reduced rate — just ask during your free consultation.

Is individual relationship counselling available online?

Yes. All of our therapists offer sessions online via Zoom or telephone. Many people find online sessions work well for this kind of reflective individual work. Face-to-face sessions are also available across England.

Still have questions? The free consultation is the easiest way to ask them — no pressure to book sessions.

SCoPEd Band C

MBACP & SNCPS Senior Accredited

“Having worked for more than 25 years in senior management, I saw the same thing repeatedly — people struggling with mental health and relationship challenges, and so often struggling to access the right support when it was needed. It was out of this recognition of human need that Hope was born.”

Ian Stockbridge founded Hope Therapy after 25+ years leading large commercial teams – watching colleagues carry stress, anxiety, and personal difficulty with nowhere to turn. He retrained rigorously, now holding Senior Accredited status with both the BACP and NCPS, alongside SCoPEd Band C — the highest independent competence verification in the UK counselling profession.

He remains a practising therapist, clinical supervisor, published author of PMDD Uncovered, and co-presenter of The Talk Room Podcast. Hope Therapy was built on the things he saw were most broken – and designed, from the ground up, to do better.
