What marriage counselling involves
Marriage counselling is a form of therapy where both partners attend sessions together with a qualified therapist. The focus is on the marriage itself — the patterns of communication, the unspoken assumptions, the emotional distance or conflict that has developed — and on helping you both understand what has changed and what might be possible.
Your therapist is not there to judge, take sides, or tell you what to do. They are there to help you see the relationship more clearly — to notice the dynamics that have become invisible because you are inside them — and to create the conditions for honest conversation. Many couples find that having a skilled third person in the room makes it possible to say the things they have been unable to say to each other for months or years. The therapist notices what neither of you can see from inside the dynamic — the moment a conversation shifts, the assumptions that go unchallenged, the patterns that repeat without either of you choosing them.
Marriage counselling is not only for marriages in crisis. Some couples come to us early — when the first signs of difficulty appear — and find that a short block of sessions prevents problems from becoming entrenched. Others come because they want to strengthen a marriage that is good but has lost some of its closeness. And some come because they need help deciding whether to stay or go, and want to make that decision with clarity rather than in the heat of an argument. Whatever brings you, there is no wrong time to seek support — and no minimum level of difficulty required. If your marriage matters to you, that is reason enough.
What marriage counselling can help with
The issues that bring married couples to counselling are varied, but common themes include communication breakdown and recurring conflict, infidelity or a breach of trust, loss of emotional or physical intimacy, disagreements about parenting, finances, or life direction, the impact of a significant life change — such as retirement, illness, or children leaving home — and the gradual sense that you have drifted apart without either of you quite understanding how.
We also support married couples who have decided to separate and want help doing so as constructively as possible — particularly when children, shared finances, or extended family are involved. This kind of work focuses on communication, co-parenting, and minimising harm, and it can make an enormous difference to how the separation unfolds in practice. Ending a marriage well — with respect and honesty — is one of the hardest things a couple can do, and professional support can make it significantly more manageable.
If you are engaged or planning a civil partnership, we offer pre-marital counselling — a proactive approach to building a strong foundation before you commit. Pre-marital counselling explores how you handle conflict, what your expectations are around finances, family, and the future, and how to communicate about the things that matter most. It is one of the most practical investments you can make in your relationship, and many couples wish they had done it sooner.
How sessions work
The free 15-minute consultation is the starting point. We listen to what is happening, answer your questions, and discuss whether marriage counselling is the right approach. If your partner is hesitant, the consultation can help them feel more comfortable — there is no pressure and no obligation to continue.
We then match you with a therapist suited to your specific situation. This is not a random allocation — we actively guide the matching process based on what you tell us, because the right therapist makes a significant difference to whether the work succeeds. Our team includes counsellors experienced in communication-focused work, trauma-informed approaches, integrative couples therapy, and working with LGBTQIA+ marriages and neurodiverse partners. We take time to get the match right, because the therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in whether the work succeeds.
Sessions are typically 50 minutes, with extended sessions available for couples who need more time to go deeper. Most couples attend weekly or fortnightly, and the pace is always led by what works for you. Marriage counselling is available online via Zoom — which many couples find works well, particularly for those with busy schedules or who prefer the privacy of attending from home — and face-to-face at locations across England, including Aylesbury, Stevenage, Portsmouth, Fareham, Cambridge, Gloucester, and other areas.
Sessions are confidential. In marriage counselling, confidentiality applies to what is shared in the room together. There are limited circumstances where this may need to change — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm — and your therapist will explain these clearly before you begin.

Getting Started
What to expect
Starting marriage counselling can feel daunting — but we make it as straightforward as possible. Here is how it works.
1
Free consultation
A brief, relaxed 15-minute conversation with a member of our booking team. We listen to what is going on and explore whether counselling could help. No pressure, no obligation.
2
Matched with a therapist
Based on your needs and preferences, we carefully match you with one of our 90+ qualified therapists. If it doesn’t feel right, we’ll find someone else — at no extra cost.
3
Your first session
Your therapist will take time to understand your situation and what you are hoping to work on. There is no rush, no script, and nothing you have to share before you are ready.
Most clients hear back from us the same working day, and typically begin sessions within a week of the free consultation — depending on your preferences and therapist availability.
Standards you can trust
How we match you with the right marriage counsellor
Choosing a therapist is a personal decision, and we take time to get the match right.
A careful match, not a long list
Therapist availability changes from week to week, so rather than asking you to choose from a directory, we take time during your free 15-minute consultation to understand what you are looking for — and then match you with a therapist suited to your needs.
During the consultation, we will ask about:
- What you would like the work to focus on, and any specific concerns you would like support with
- Whether you would prefer face-to-face counselling, online sessions, or a combination of the two
- Any preferences around therapy approach (counselling, CBT, EMDR, hypnotherapy, mindfulness, ACT, compassion focused therapy and others)
- Day and time availability that works around your life
- Any specialisms that matter to you — for example LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy, neurodiversity-affirming support, or particular life experiences
- Practical preferences — for example therapist gender, age range, or shared lived experience where that matters to you
All therapists we work with are qualified and registered with appropriate UK professional bodies, and we will confirm the most suitable options with you before any sessions begin.
Professional standards across our team
Hope Therapy & Counselling Services has been operating since 2014, and we hold Organisational Membership with the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). We work in line with the NCPS Code of Ethics and BACP Good Practice, and our wider clinical standards include:
- Qualified, professionally registered therapists across the team — registrations vary per therapist and are confirmed before matching
- Ongoing clinical supervision in line with professional body requirements
- Continuing professional development to maintain and develop practice
- Clear confidentiality standards, with limits explained before sessions begin
- Client-centred, non-judgemental and inclusive practice across all areas of identity and experience
- Founder-led clinical oversight from Ian Stockbridge — MBACP (Senior Accredited) – who continues to lead the practice and oversee its standards
Whether you choose face-to-face counselling near you or online therapy from anywhere in the UK, you can expect to be matched with a therapist who is appropriately qualified and suited to the support you are looking for.

Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between marriage counselling and couples counselling?
In practice, they are very similar. Marriage counselling specifically addresses couples who are married or in a civil partnership, and may include issues unique to that commitment — such as navigating legal, financial, and family obligations.
Can marriage counselling save a marriage?
Counselling cannot guarantee any outcome. What it can do is help you understand the patterns in your relationship, communicate more honestly, and make informed decisions about what you both want. Many couples find that the relationship improves. Others find the clarity to separate well.
Does my partner need to agree to come?
It helps if both partners are willing. The free consultation can help the more reluctant partner feel comfortable. If your partner is not willing to attend, individual relationship counselling is also available.
How much does marriage counselling cost?
Marriage counselling starts from £85 per 50-minute session. Extended sessions and session packages are also available. We may be able to offer sessions at a reduced rate — just ask during your free consultation.
Is marriage counselling available near me?
We offer marriage counselling online via Zoom to anyone in the UK, and face-to-face at locations across England. Online sessions work well for many couples and remove the need to travel together, which can feel easier in the early stages. Your free consultation will help us find the best option for your circumstances.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies. Some couples find that 6 to 8 sessions provides the clarity and tools they need. Others benefit from longer-term work. Your therapist will discuss this with you and review progress together. There is no fixed commitment.
Still have questions? The free consultation is the easiest way to ask them — no pressure to book sessions.

“Having worked for more than 25 years in senior management, I saw the same thing repeatedly — people struggling with mental health and relationship challenges, and so often struggling to access the right support when it was needed. It was out of this recognition of human need that Hope was born.”
Ian Stockbridge founded Hope Therapy after 25+ years leading large commercial teams – watching colleagues carry stress, anxiety, and personal difficulty with nowhere to turn. He retrained rigorously, now holding Senior Accredited status with both the BACP and NCPS, alongside SCoPEd Band C — the highest independent competence verification in the UK counselling profession.
He remains a practising therapist, clinical supervisor, published author of PMDD Uncovered, and co-presenter of The Talk Room Podcast. Hope Therapy was built on the things he saw were most broken – and designed, from the ground up, to do better.
