What infidelity counselling involves
Infidelity counselling is professional therapeutic support for people dealing with the impact of an affair — whether you are the person who was betrayed, the person who had the affair, or a couple trying to decide what happens next. It is available as individual counselling, couples work, or a combination of both.
The discovery of infidelity creates a kind of emotional crisis that is unlike almost anything else. The betrayal, the shock, the questioning of everything you thought you knew — these are not reactions that resolve on their own, and they are not things you should be expected to manage without support. Counselling provides a confidential, non-judgmental space to process what has happened, understand why it happened, and make informed decisions about what you want going forward.
Your therapist will not tell you whether to stay or leave. That decision belongs to you. What they will do is help you see the situation clearly — the emotions, the patterns, the practical realities — so that whatever you decide, you are deciding from a place of understanding rather than raw pain. Many couples who work through infidelity in counselling find that the relationship becomes stronger — not because the affair was acceptable, but because the work that follows it creates a deeper level of honesty than existed before. Others find the clarity to separate, and that is equally valid. The point is not to reach a particular outcome — it is to reach the right outcome for you, with support and understanding rather than in the fog of crisis.
Who infidelity counselling is for
If you have been betrayed, counselling can help you process the shock, the grief, the anger, and the devastation that infidelity brings. It can help you understand the obsessive and intrusive thoughts, the hypervigilance, the loss of trust in your own judgment — all of which are normal responses to an abnormal situation. You do not need to have decided anything about the future of the relationship in order to begin.
If you are the person who had the affair, counselling offers a space to explore what happened and why — without excusing it, but without the level of shame that prevents honest understanding. Many people who have affairs are confused by their own behaviour, and understanding the reasons behind it is an important part of deciding what happens next. Seeking support is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign that you are taking the situation seriously.
If you are attending as a couple, counselling helps you navigate the rebuilding process together — addressing the breach of trust, understanding what was happening in the relationship before the affair, improving communication, and deciding whether the relationship can be repaired. This kind of work requires honesty from both partners, and your therapist will support you in having the conversations that feel most difficult.
We also support people who are dealing with the discovery of a partner’s infidelity from the past — sometimes years or decades later — and people processing the impact of infidelity in a previous relationship that is affecting their current one. The emotional aftermath of infidelity does not follow a schedule, and it is never too late to seek support for something that is still affecting you.
How sessions work
The free 15-minute consultation is where you start. We listen to what has happened, understand where you are in the process, and recommend whether individual sessions, couples work, or a combination would be most helpful. There is no pressure and no obligation. Many people find that just having this initial conversation — being heard by someone outside the situation, without judgment — is a relief in itself.
We then match you with a therapist experienced in working with infidelity. This is sensitive work that requires a therapist who can hold the complexity of the situation — the pain of the betrayed partner, the guilt and confusion of the other, and the difficult dynamic between them — without taking sides. We take time to get the match right, because it matters more here than almost anywhere else. If the match does not feel right after the first session, we will find someone else at no additional cost.
Sessions are typically 50 minutes, with extended sessions available when you need more time. Infidelity counselling is available online via Zoom — which many people find helpful for the privacy it provides — and face-to-face at locations across England.
Sessions are confidential. In couples work, confidentiality applies to what is shared in the room together. There are limited circumstances where confidentiality may need to change — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm — and your therapist will explain these clearly before you begin.

I was the one who had the affair, and I did not think I deserved support. My counsellor helped me understand why it happened without excusing it — and that honesty was what my partner needed from me.

The images would not stop. The EMDR sessions helped me process what had happened so that I could think about it without being overwhelmed by it. That was the turning point.

Standards you can trust
How we match you with the right therapist for infidelity support
Choosing a therapist is a personal decision, and we take time to get the match right.
A careful match, not a long list
Therapist availability changes from week to week, so rather than asking you to choose from a directory, we take time during your free 15-minute consultation to understand what you are looking for — and then match you with a therapist suited to your needs.
During the consultation, we will ask about:
- What you would like the work to focus on, and any specific concerns you would like support with
- Whether you would prefer face-to-face counselling, online sessions, or a combination of the two
- Any preferences around therapy approach (counselling, CBT, EMDR, hypnotherapy, mindfulness, ACT, compassion focused therapy and others)
- Day and time availability that works around your life
- Any specialisms that matter to you — for example LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy, neurodiversity-affirming support, or particular life experiences
- Practical preferences — for example therapist gender, age range, or shared lived experience where that matters to you
All therapists we work with are qualified and registered with appropriate UK professional bodies, and we will confirm the most suitable options with you before any sessions begin.
Professional standards across our team
Hope Therapy & Counselling Services has been operating since 2014, and we hold Organisational Membership with the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). We work in line with the NCPS Code of Ethics and BACP Good Practice, and our wider clinical standards include:
- Qualified, professionally registered therapists across the team — registrations vary per therapist and are confirmed before matching
- Ongoing clinical supervision in line with professional body requirements
- Continuing professional development to maintain and develop practice
- Clear confidentiality standards, with limits explained before sessions begin
- Client-centred, non-judgemental and inclusive practice across all areas of identity and experience
- Founder-led clinical oversight from Ian Stockbridge — MBACP (Senior Accredited) – who continues to lead the practice and oversee its standards
Whether you choose face-to-face counselling near you or online therapy from anywhere in the UK, you can expect to be matched with a therapist who is appropriately qualified and suited to the support you are looking for.

Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can a relationship survive infidelity?
Many relationships do survive infidelity — and some become stronger as a result. But it depends on both partners’ willingness to be honest and to commit to rebuilding. Counselling cannot guarantee an outcome, but it can help you make informed decisions.
Should we attend together or separately?
It depends on your situation. Some couples attend together from the start. Others begin with individual sessions before moving into joint work. Your free consultation will help us recommend the right starting point.
I am the one who had the affair. Can I still get support?
Yes. Counselling is available to both partners. Understanding why the affair happened, processing guilt and confusion, and deciding what you want going forward are all valid reasons to seek support. There is no judgment.
Is everything discussed in counselling confidential?
Yes. Sessions are confidential. In couples work, confidentiality applies to what is shared in the room together. There are limited exceptions, and your therapist will explain these clearly before you begin.
How much does infidelity counselling cost?
Individual sessions start from £65. Couples sessions start from £85. EMDR starts from £95. We may be able to offer sessions at a reduced rate — just ask during your free consultation.
Is divorce counselling available online?
Yes. All of our therapists offer sessions online via Zoom or telephone. This can be particularly helpful when logistics are complicated. Face-to-face sessions are also available across England.
Still have questions? The free consultation is the easiest way to ask them — no pressure to book sessions.

“Having worked for more than 25 years in senior management, I saw the same thing repeatedly — people struggling with mental health and relationship challenges, and so often struggling to access the right support when it was needed. It was out of this recognition of human need that Hope was born.”
Ian Stockbridge founded Hope Therapy after 25+ years leading large commercial teams – watching colleagues carry stress, anxiety, and personal difficulty with nowhere to turn. He retrained rigorously, now holding Senior Accredited status with both the BACP and NCPS, alongside SCoPEd Band C — the highest independent competence verification in the UK counselling profession.
He remains a practising therapist, clinical supervisor, published author of PMDD Uncovered, and co-presenter of The Talk Room Podcast. Hope Therapy was built on the things he saw were most broken – and designed, from the ground up, to do better.
