What EMDR is
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing — EMDR — is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps people process distressing memories and experiences that have become stuck in the way the brain stores them. Rather than talking through difficult experiences in the way traditional counselling does, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation — most commonly guided eye movements — to support the brain’s natural ability to process and integrate what has happened.
EMDR is recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an effective treatment for trauma and post-traumatic stress. It is also used effectively for anxiety, phobias, grief, and a range of other difficulties rooted in distressing past experiences.
It can feel unfamiliar at first — most people have not encountered anything quite like it before. That is entirely normal, and your therapist will explain how it works clearly and carefully before anything begins.
Your therapist
EMDR at Hope Therapy is delivered by therapists with specific EMDR training and accreditation. When we match you with a therapist, we take into account what you have told us about your situation, your preferences, and the kind of support you are looking for. If the match doesn’t feel right, we’ll find someone who does — at no extra cost.
How sessions are delivered
EMDR sessions run for between 50 and 60 minutes. The exact length will be agreed with your therapist at the outset and will remain consistent across your sessions. Sessions are available online via a secure video platform, or face-to-face subject to therapist availability and your location. Face-to-face availability varies by area and will be confirmed when your therapist is matched to you.
Confidentiality
Everything discussed in your EMDR sessions is confidential. There are limited circumstances where this may need to change — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else — and your therapist will explain these clearly before your sessions begin, in line with professional ethical standards.

A note on what EMDR is and is not
